The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is celebrated every year on May 22nd to increase awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the measures taken to protect it. The theme for the year 2023 is “Our solutions are in nature” which recognizes that nature has the solutions to the pressing challenges facing humanity. For us in Zambia, this could be an opportunity to also consider the what we lose by not protecting nature.
So back to basics: Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, is essential for the functioning of our planet and the well-being of all its inhabitants. It provides us with food, medicines, and resources, and helps regulate the Earth’s climate and ecosystem services. However, human activities such as deforestation, pollution, over-fishing, and the introduction of invasive species are putting this biodiversity at risk.
The loss of biodiversity is not only an environmental issue, but also a social and economic one. The extinction of species and ecosystems has a ripple effect on everything, including on human health and livelihoods. It is therefore essential that we take action to protect and conserve biodiversity for future generations.
On this International Day for Biological Diversity, we must take the opportunity to appreciate and protect the natural world around us. We can also research and support organizations and initiatives that work towards protecting and conserving biodiversity, such as supporting conservation efforts, reducing waste and using renewable energy.
Let us come together to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and to take action to protect it. We must recognize that our solutions are in nature and that by working together, we can ensure a sustainable future for everyone in Zambia
